Total Commitment

Recently I reunited with friends from 50 years ago. Ann and John have had a full and adventurous life together, but in recent years, John has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and is progressing through early stages of the disease. What I witnessed happening between them was Ann’s efforts to make his life great in spite of the challenges he faced with everyday activities like ordering lunch, knowing where to sit, and starting a conversation. Ann’s total commitment plucked a string inside me, reminding me of how short and fragile our current lives can be. It also reawakened my commitment to love and care unconditionally. I hope that those I love and others that I encounter will reap the benefit of this stunning reminder.
