A Short Ride

When I was working as a medical sales representative in Chicago long ago as a young woman on my way to a hospital call, it began to snow, a heavy wet snow. I was about two city blocks from my destination when I noticed a young mother walking rapidly with her small child in her arms. They were getting wet and it was bitter cold. I pulled over to the side of the street and got out and asked her if I could give her a ride. She was happy to accept and once in the car she said her son was sick and she was worried he would get worse out in the cold. It was clear her son's health was the most important thing to her and she was overwhelmed. I drove them to the ER and made sure she had money to get a cab home. She was so grateful and started to cry. I was moved by her love and devotion to her sick child. I never forgot her and her son. It was a short ride that left a life long impact on me.
